CHAPTER 8

CHINA

Who would have thought, when Deng Xianoping, reformist leader of the Communist Party in China, announced a new “open door” policy in December 1978, that China would become a commercial superpower?

Back then the world did not pay any attention to the significance of a country with the world’s biggest population announcing its plans to join the globalization movement. Some even made the mistake to compare China to India, which has a similar large but a much younger population. Even though India was officially a democratic country and partly joined the globalization movement, it remained a third-world nation with third-world problems. Yet China left India literally in the dust. China has systematically passed legislation that has freed its economy from the grip of its centralistic planners, while India’s economy remained protectionistic, making it hard for foreigners to invest or even open stores in their country.

Many people who have done business in China say that it is probably the most capitalistic country in the world today. China’s huge middle class gives businesses plenty of ground to grow. At this moment China’s middle class is estimated to be three hundred million people. That's huge! This almost equals the entire population of the USA. Analysts estimate that this middle class will grow to seven hundred, maybe even eight hundred million over the next twenty years.1
